| Since 1979, the People’s Republic of
China (PRC) has been open to the development of joint educational
programs with other countries. Now, more than 320,000 student
and 1,800 faculty go abroad each year to study somewhere else
around the world. The scope of the programs is as varied as
the creativity and legal constraints of the people and the
countries working with China.
During the next few years, more than 16,000,000
Chinese will enter Chinese universities for higher education.
And over 90% of Chinese children go on to high school each
year, and English is now being taught in the elementary grade
levels across China. Increasingly, the impact of globalization,
the WTO, and the continued opening of China to capitalism
are driving the educational market. As these events unfold
in China, there is an increasing demand for collaborative
programs with foreign universities in virtually every field
of academics. While the business arena played a major role
in driving China into change and expansion of its educational
collaborations, the sciences, technology, architecture, and
even the humanities and social sciences are academic areas
in which the Chinese are now finding significant interest
for educational collaboration.
